Transforming a Period Property in Plymouth

There’s something magical about period properties — the high ceilings, original features, and sense of history make them truly unique. But older homes often come with challenges too, from awkward layouts to outdated finishes.

In this project, I renovated from the ground up, to breathe new life into my new Victorian home. The goal? To create a space that honoured the property’s heritage while making it comfortable, practical, and perfect for modern living.

What I set out to achieve:

  • A fresh, light-filled home without losing its period charm

  • A design that balanced traditional details with modern touches

Before: The Challenges

When I first saw the property, it had:

  • Dark, heavy colours that made rooms feel smaller

  • Mismatched finishes from various past renovations

  • Underused spaces that lacked purpose

  • Tired flooring and dated lighting

After: The Transformation

Light & Airy Colour Palette

I chose a soft, neutral backdrop with warm undertones to make the rooms feel brighter without losing warmth.

Styling Tip: In period homes, off-whites and gentle creams work beautifully with original features like cornicing and woodwork.

Restoring & Highlighting Period Features

I restored the original fireplaces and refreshed the wood floors, making them a focal point in each room.

Styling Tip: Always protect and celebrate original features — they’re a home’s unique fingerprint.

Modern Comforts in a Traditional Setting

To bring the home into the 21st century, I updated the kitchen with sleek cabinetry and energy-efficient appliances, in fact the whole house was run off of electriciy and solar panels.

Styling Tip: Mixing modern and traditional elements keeps a period property feeling relevant without losing its soul.
